From Vinea-wachau.at:

"There is hardly another vineyard that has shaped the perception of the Wachau as a serious high-quality wine-growing region as strongly as that of the Knoll family. Many generations of this family have dedicated their lives to growing wine: the first glass bottles were filled with Knoll wine in the 1950s, and the arguably most famous wine label in Austria – the family’s trademark baroque image of Saint Urban – first graced the Knoll wine bottles in 1962.

The family cultivates wine on sixteen hectares, and the names of his terraces have become common knowledge among both national and international wine drinkers: the Kellerberg, Loibenberg, Pfaffenberg and especially the Schütt yield the fruit for the famous range of Knoll Riesling and Veltliner, which are all clear, precise, mineral-rich and structured, frequently revealing their full potential after years or even decades.

These wines are complemented by additional grape varieties and different wine styles, which further broaden the range of this particular winemaker and also that of the region. For years, the Knolls have vinified Muskateller and Gelber Traminer, and since 1988 they produce nearly every year a Vinothekfüllung of Grüner Veltliner, which has been accompanied by a Riesling since 2000. Both of the Vinothekfüllungen could be defined as dry Auslesen but sweet Auslesen and Prädikatswein also count among the Knolls’ repertoire, and one should certainly sample these essences."

The Kreutles vineyard is the more eastern of the two slope toe locations on the Loibenberg. The name is referring to the former undergrowth that had to be removed to cultivate the area. The Kreutles vineyard at the foot of the Loibenberg is formed from loess. Loess is a fertile and calcareous glacial sediment that is transported by wind.

Two distinct horizons can be seen in the profile: the upper horizon that is enriched with humus, and the brownish-red loess horizon. This soil has developed from eroded Gföhl gneiss material from the nearby Loibenberg. At the top left of the humus horizon, there is a pebble from a transported glacial Danube riverine terrace, which was also transported down to the Kreutles vineyard by slope erosion on the Loibenberg.
The wines from loess soils are expressive, and depending on the winemaker's signature, they can also reach baroque richness.
