Cadence 'Coda' Cara Mia Vineyard Red Blend 2022
Ben Smith and Gaye McNutt continue their run of brilliant Bordeaux-inspired efforts from their tiny Seattle label.
Tasting notes
Coda is, as it has been since 2019, 100% Cara Mia estate fruit. Each barrel of Coda is tended exactly as our Bel Canto and Camerata reserves. The only difference is that the Coda barrels did not fit the profile we envision for our best blends. So does it taste like Bel Canto? Absolute family resemblance, yes, but in a package that is ready to drink now. Coda leads with gorgeous blueberry, menthol and dried currants on the nose leading to a polished, plush texture on the palate. Tannins are soft but present and the overall structure is supported by bright acidity. Deeply concentrated but not heavy, the finish goes on and on. Cara’s tasting note simply reads “glug glug.”
Other notes
Coda, n. a. A music passage of more or less independent character introduced after the completion of the essential parts of a movement, so as to form a satisfactory conclusion, b. The second label of Cadence winery. The home for barrels not essential to the estate or vineyard blends.

Cara Mia Vineyard: Established in 2004
“A great showing and all the more remarkable considering that Cara Mia Vineyard was only planted in 2004. There are any number of powerhouse Bordeaux blends being made in Washington today, but very few wines with this degree of class.” - Steve Tanzer
