Teutonic Wine Co Red Blend 2023
Teutonic Wine Company was founded by Barnaby and Olga Tuttle in 2005. While these wines are inspired by the wines of the Middle-Mosel Valley in Germany and Alsace in France, they are a celebration of Oregon. Barnaby and Olga work exclusively with cool-climate growing sites and are focused on thoughtful, quality farming.
In the cellar, they embrace a minimalist intervention philosophy and ferment strictly with indigenous yeast, native to each vineyard. Barnaby and Olga stared Teutonic Wine Company with no formal grape growing, winemaking experience, or financial backing. They learned while doing and Teutonic started as a true bootstrap operation. Now, with more than 15 years of experience under their belts, these two are making characterful wines with a strong point of view from impeccably farmed vineyards.
Influenced by the Middle-Mosel Valley in Germany and the Alsace region in France, Teutonic Wine Company celebrates the characteristics of these wine regions here in Oregon. Only working with cool-climate growing sites, adhering to natural farming practices and minimal intervention, Teutonic wines reflect all that is natural in winemaking—from the vineyard, to the cellar, to the bottle. Teutonic’s house style is consistent throughout its catalog of wines: crisp, bright and with balanced acidity, making them easy to pair with many dishes.
The 2023 Red Blend is equal parts Trousseau Noir and Gamay from Abbey Road Farm Vineyard in Willamette Valley where they practice organic viticulture and farm without irrigation. Hand-harvested, de-stemmed and co-fermented (about half and half) via pied de cuve where wild yeast is collected at the vineyard for pilot fermentations - think sourdough starter. This natural fermentation takes place in neutral French oak. No additions or subtractions, the wine is raised as well in neutral French with minimal sulfur at bottling.
It is purplish-red in the glass, with aromas of ice box plums, tart berries, and dewy rosebud. Medium-weight mouthfeel that spills way from the wake of bright acids and minerality. An excellent balance of fruit underscored with freshly turned earth.
