Madson Kessler Haak Syrah 2023
Established in 2018, Madson Wines is owned and operated by Cole Thomas, Ken Swegles and Abbey Chrystal, three friends who share a passion for their place in California's Santa Cruz Mountains American Viticultural Area (AVA). To produce wines that simultaneously convey that enthusiasm and preserve the land with which they work, they are committed to organic practices and regenerative agriculture in the vineyards, enriching the soil and sequestering carbon dioxide to increase biodiversity and help improve the local watershed. Cellar work is light-handed, too, with all fermentation occurring naturally and spontaneously, and adding just a small amount of sulfur at bottling. This is an elegant, textural and mineral driven version of chardonnay that showcases lemon pith, seashell, and bright acidity. Organically grown, sustainably grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
From the winery: We made this cuvée with 50% whole clusters, layered with the destemmed fruit in small open-topped fermenters and kept cold for 5 days. We started a small pied de cuve during the cold soak, which was added to the fruit on day 5. We used a gentle pigeage throughout to submerge the cap without much stem breakage. Pressed to neutral oak after 11 days maceration and bottled after 9 months elevage. We are in continuous exploration of Coastal California terroir, and we feel extremely fortunate to be able to work with this beautiful, organically farmed vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills. With their feet in calcite-rich sandy loam, and their leaves bathed in sun and cool Pacific breeze, this vineyard produces a wine that furthers our obsession with cool-climate Syrah.
