Abacela Umpqua Valley Malbec 2021
Founded in 1995 by Earl and Hilda Jones in the Umpqua Valley, Abacela, meaning “he/she/they plant a vine”, was the first winery in Oregon and the PNW to plant Tempranillo. Earl and Hilda were scientists with zero winemaking experience who left secure careers and trekked 2700 miles west, kids in tow, to determine if Tempranillo and other grapes not typically planted in the area could be grown and produced in Oregon’s Umpqua Valley. Dedicated to exact variety-climate matching, Abacela grows numerous varieties suited to the region and site, earning acclaim for producing consistently expressive and distinctive wines from their estate vineyards.
Abacela was named the 2013 Oregon Winery of the Year by Wine Press Northwest. Earl and Hilda Jones were awarded the industry's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015 by the Oregon Wine Board. Abacela was then nominated for 2015 American Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast magazine.

A barrel selection that shows the real potential of Southern Oregon for varieties that do well in reliably ripening environments. This full-bodied wine remains fresh and balanced throughout. Opulence and power wrapped in true elegance, this estate Malbec shows aromas of dried violets and generous berry fruits. Ripe red raspberries followed by blackberries and mint. The palate is velveteen. Flavours of sweet ripe blueberry, cinnamon and baking chocolate are balanced by a mineral graphite spine and the finish, long, luxurious and rich. - Decanter, 93 pts
