Giacosa Fratelli Basarin Vigna Gianmaté Barbaresco 2019
Giacosa Fratelli is a fifth generation family-run winery in the heart of Neive, Piedmont, passed down from father to son, brother to cousins. In 1895 Giuseppe Giacosa was a sharecropper, like his father, working the land in the hills of Langhe. He dreamed of owning a winery in these hills and heard of one for sale for three thousand Italian Lira: unfortunately an amount he surely would never be able to afford. That night he dreamed of numbers and woke up to play them in the lottery. Fortune smiled upon Giuseppe and, with his winnings he was able to buy the wine cellar.
After WWII, Giuseppe's son Leone expanded the business started by his father, devoting all his time to improving the vinification and aging techniques of Alba's typical wines: Barbera and Dolcetto. In the 1990’s, the family set their sights on increasing the vineyards owned in areas where the noblest wines of the Langhe region are produced: Barolo and Barbaresco.
The family, including next generation twin brothers Mauro and Alessandro, deeply believe in reducing their consumption and carbon emissions. They work sustainably in the vineyard and winery - soon to be a zero emissions facility - to preserve the terroir and history of these traditional Piemonte wines.

Attractive orange-peel, green-strawberry and mushroom aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with firm tannins that give a vertical feeling to the end of the palate. Give it a couple of years to soften. - James Suckling, 92 pts
