Château Croix de Mai Médoc 2020
Cecile Reich-Courrian has been firmly rooted in Begadan for over 20 years and worked for many years in marketing at a Premier Cru winery in Pauillac. Her husband Gilles and his brother Phillipe have been running the Cru Bourgeois Château L'Argenteyre in Begadan since 1992. In 2010, the opportunity arose to buy a small plot of 1.76 hectares in the immediate vicinity of Château L'Argenteyre, establishing Château Croix de Mai. The average age of the vines is 55 years and the real highlight is that 90% of the vineyard is planted to Merlot - very unusual for Medoc! The rest is planted to Malbec and Petit Verdot. The soils are gravel over a rare outcropping of limestone. The estate is close to the Gironde estuary. The sea breeze ensures good cooling at night, which leads to slower ripening of the grapes, great fruit expression, and the retention of supporting acidity. Later Cecile was able to add another small parcel, still keeping the estate to just under 3 hectares, planted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon.
The name of the Château Croix de Mai estate comes from the ancient cross in front of its cellar. Religious processions with this cross were held there in May, where the regions winemakers gathered asking for protection of the wines and celebrating the arrival of spring, the sun and the awakening of nature.
Tasting notes
Deep through the glass darkly just translucent ruby/purple in color with then more classic claret aromas suggestive of dark ripe berries, ripe blue plum, cassis, toasted baguette, baking spices and a sense of the parched vineyards floor underneath it all; cool, smooth, polished on entry with fine chalky tannins giving shape and sustaining complex dark berry and earth-tinged flavors long on the finish. In our humble estimation, this is the most impressive effort yet from this property at the far reaches of the northern Médoc.
