Le Vigne di Faraone Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo 2023
The Faraone family is in their third generation of family winemaking. They are one of the historic wineries of Abruzzo, started with grandpa Alfonso planting grapes in 1930, then with Giovanni who made the first ‘Metodo Classico’ of the region (the family began bottling in 1970) and today with Giovanni's sons who are carrying the family tradition. Giovanni Faraone is currently in charge of the winemaking, aided by his wife Paola & sons Alfonso & Federico; the latter an oenologist who’s worked in France and New Zealand before taking up a post in Umbria. Located in the heart of Abruzzo, they are known in the region for their attentive organic agriculture and traditional winemaking. Their 9 hectare property is now focused on the new ‘Collepietro’ vineyard at Mosciano Sant’Angelo in the Colline Teramane DOCG zone of Abruzzo, some 10 miles from the Adriatic.
Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo is one of the most traditional wines of the region; it is the everyday wine in every village of the region. Sometimes mistaken for a rose, but Faraone insists this is not rose, it is a light red wine. This is made from the free run juice of their famous Montepulciano. Meaning, they put the grapes in the vat and the juice that runs out from the weight (without being crushed) is free run. The result is a fragrant, fruity, easy, light bodied red wine that is traditionally served with a chill in the summer.
Tasting notes
Well-balanced wine, ruby red in the glass, with heady aromas of blackberry and black cherry. More fruits of the forest with notes of tobacco and liquorice follow on the palate, while silky-smooth tannins and a refreshing acidity ensure a long, pleasing finish.
