Quinta do Vesuvio Pombal do Vesuvio 2021
The Symington’s are a family of British and Portuguese origin that has lived and worked in Portugal since the 19th century. Their family business - now run by the 4th and 5th generation - is founded on a deep commitment to Portugal's people, its lands and its wines. Today there are 10 family members working across the business, committed to producing the finest ports and wines and building on the achievements of the previous generations.
The Symington Family acquired Quinta do Vesuvio in 1989 investing on a huge scale, rekindling Vesuvio’s legendary standing. One of the Douro Valley’s most renowned Quintas, with 326 hectares, and while famous for its outstanding Vintage Ports, they proudly launched their first dry wines (Douro DOC) in 2009.
Quinta do Vesuvio is situated far upriver in the Douro Superior, 74 miles from Portugal’s Atlantic coast and only 24 miles from the border with Spain. They have preserved many of the mature vineyards planted in the 1970s, some of the first to be planted in single varietal parcels. There are also much older, mixed variety vineyards (“field blends”), which contribute to the incredible complexity and structure of Quinta do Vesuvio wines.
Tasting notes
Wide aromatic range, encompassing fig, rock rose, fennel, lavender, and a hint of dry pine needles. Full-bodied on the palate with expressive tannins that define poise and power, complemented by good levels of acidity, which deliver great balance. Vigorous, whilst graceful, with tension and grip suggesting good aging potential in bottle. A great companion wine for rich, well-seasoned dishes. Decanting not necessary.
