Château Croix d'Allons Bandol Rouge 2021
Chateau Croix d’Allons is an estate that extends over nearly 9 hectares, located in La Cadière-d'Azur, a commune in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. And more precisely in Bandol, a key appellation of the Provence wine region in far south-eastern France. The vineyards are all located on rare and very old geological formations from the Triassic Period (limestone, dolomite, gypsum and cargneule), giving the vines their exceptional character. As typical for Bandol wines, the vineyards are planted to 70% to the Mourvèdre grape. In 2020 the estate received an Organic Agriculture label, certified by ECOCERT.
Philippe Damiano is the fourth generation to work these lands. The property was acquired in 1924 by Philippe's great-grandparents, Pierre and Maria, from the Salesian Fathers of Don Bosco. The Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), formally known as the Society of Saint Francis de Sales, is a religious congregation of men in the Catholic Church, founded in 1859 by the Italian priest John Bosco to help poor and migrant youngsters during the Industrial Revolution. The ruins of their first winery are still on the property today.
Tasting notes
The Croix d’Allons 2021 Bandol Rouge is a blend of 90% Mourvèdre and 10% Grenache. The nose approaches with black fruits and forest, toasted vanilla. Blueberry and black cherry combine with leather, dry wood and cloves. On the palate their is a delicious attack with a fine texture. An acidity that brings freshness to the aromas of black currant and blueberry. The wilder mid-palate (thyme, leather, smoke, meaty) ends with a finish of small, fine tannins. Pairs beautifully with autumn dishes.
