Domaine Edmond Monnot Maranges 1er Cru les Clos Roussots 2020
Maranges is the southernmost appellation of the Côte de Beaune, where the slope turns to the west, and the vines face due south. The nine-hectare estate was created in 1920 by Edmond Monnot’s father, André. Today, Edmond’s son, Stéphane, in charge of both viticulture and winemaking, manages the domaine with his wife Christelle, who is originally from Saint Amour in the north of Beaujolais. Included in their holdings are nearly seven hectares of Premier Cru vineyards in pebbly soils of brown limestone and clay. Farming is lutte raisonée, with Stéphane noting, “I won’t intervene unless I really have to.” His winery was rebuilt in 2009 to allow for gravity to take the place of pumps, an improvement Stéphane says, “produces more supple wines.” The grapes are entirely hand harvested, and the wines age for a year in mostly neutral barrels and steel, with some of the Premier Crus seeing as much as 30% new barrels.
