Domaine Le Roc des Anges 'Ùnic' Rouge 2022
Domaine Roc des Anges is run by Marjorie and Stéphane Gallet, a wife and husband team devoted to crafting exceptional low-intervention wines. Their domaine covers 40 hectares nestled in the northern reaches of Roussillon, at the base of the Eastern Pyrenees. It’s tough country; windy, hot and dry with very poor soil. Winegrowers battle low yield, alcohol, high PH and bacteria. But from that mineral rock, they coax incredibly vibrant wines, aromatically complex and loaded with fresh fruit. Facing north is part of the secret of Roc des Anges. Each of their 43 different parcels of vines face north, allowing for a cooler exposure in Roussillon's brutal summer heat.
Farming biodynamically encourages deep root penetration, and the cultivation of a high leaf canopy provides for great photosynthesis and good shade for the grapes. Every grape at Roc des Anges is picked by hand, at the coolest parts of the day, and are kept cool all the way into the press. From there, the effect of the mineral soil takes over, providing that great finesse and freshness in every wine.
Tasting notes
Ùnic is not about power and concentration, it is about elegance and restraint. It has this charming, less-is-more style, with great tension, freshness, refinement and nuances.
