Val di Suga Rosso di Montalcino 2020
Cut through by the Suga stream, the Val di Suga estate on the northern slope of Montalcino witnessed a gradual reconversion of the land from arable to vines in the 1960s. The first harvest was in 1973 and Val di Suga released their first wine in 1975.
During the 1980s an ambitious project began for Val di Suga to produce great Brunellos from defined areas and single vineyards. This went further than the approach at that time, which was mainly geared towards blending vineyards. In 1983 the Vigna del Lago Cru was created, from a single vineyard located between the lake and the winery, on the northern slope of Montalcino. In 1988 the Vigna Spuntali Cru was created, from a single vineyard, 15 hectares on the southwestern slope of Montalcino, facing the sea. Lastly, in 2009, the Poggio al Granchio Cru was created, from a single vineyard, 20 hectares on the southeastern slope of Montalcino, near Monte Amiata.
With the creation of the Poggio al Granchio Cru, Val di Suga acquired an element which marked it out from any other Montalcino estate. It became one of the few estates with vineyards on different hillside locations and the only producer to own vineyards on the three slopes, 3 different terriors, best suited to top quality Brunello Cru.

The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino is wildly attractive, with sweet violet florals, sugar dusted blackberries and smoke forming its bouquet. It washes across the palate with grace, soft-textured and round, while leaving a staining of wild berries under an air of blue and purple floral perfumes. Gently tannic, yet more of an accent than an obstacle, the 2020 finishes with medium length, leaving hints of licorice to slowly fade. - Vinous, 90 pts
