Château Fourcas-Borie Listrac-Médoc 2016

Bruno Borie’s mother’s family is one of the oldest winemaking families in the Central Médoc. Born Monique Rochette, she was raised at Listrac’s Château Ducluzeau.

The estate had been in her family for several generations and is only a stone’s throw from Fourcas-Borie, an estate spread over approximately 45 hectares, 35 hectares are planted with vines of 25-year-old in average. Bruno Borie began managing Fourcas-Borie in 2009.

The Fourcas-Borie vineyard dominates the tiny Listrac hamlets of Fourcas and Tris. Sitting on a gentle rise, at 45 meters (150 feet) above sea level, Listrac is on the limit of Landes County border. The word Listrac literally means edge, from the French word lisière. It overlooks the Médoc peninsula and is only 25 kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean; when the wind blows from the west you can smell the ocean. Here, more than half the soil is composed of gravel on a clay base and the rest is clay-siliceous soils on a base of limestone. The soils add a mineral note to the rich fruit tastes and aromas, giving Fourcas-Borie a very special range of flavors.

Tasting notes

The 2016 nose is fruity, fresh and offers concentration. It reveals notes of blackberry, cassis and small touches of small wild red fruits associated with a hint of flowers as well as very discreet hints of spices. The palate is fruity, juicy, well-balanced and offers good definition, with silkiness and good structure. On the palate this wine expresses notes of blackberry, juicy cassis and wild raspberry associated  with  small  hints  of cherry and  toasted oak. Tannins are fine, elegant  and  well-built.

Bold black fruits give this wine great richness and density. It has plenty of power, with a balance between the tannins and ripe black-currant flavors. The juicy aftertaste comes from the unusually high 15% of Petit Verdot in the blend. — Wine Enthusiast, 91 pts
