Accornero 'Bricco del Bosco' Grignolino 2022

The Accornero estate, located in Vignale Monferrato, was founded in 1897 but entered the father Giulio, who started making wine in the modern winemaking age with current owner Ermanno Accornero’s father Giulio, who started making wine in the mid-1950s. Giulio’s two sons, Massimo and Ermanno, started taking part in running the winery by the end of the 1970s, and focused on estate bottling. Ermanno is still at the helm today, assisted in winemaking by star-consultant Mario Ronco. The estate boasts 30 hectares, of which 25 are planted to vines farmed organically with sustainable agriculture.

Tasting notes

“Grignolino” most likely derives either from the Piedmontese dialect word grignole,“grating of teeth,” in a reference to the variety’s high acidity and tannic clout, or perhaps from another meaning of the word, “seeds,” because the grapes contain, on average, more seeds (three) than other varieties (which usually only have two).

The 2022 ‘Bricco del Bosco’ is 100% Grignolino from the Monferrato Casalese DOC within Piedmont. The 'unofficial' mention of Vigne Vecchie (old vines) in this case definitely fits, given that the original planting of the vineyard, 1.8 hectares in total, dates back to 1961. After a very long contact between must and skins (about 40 days) during vilification, the wine is racked and matures for 30 months in French oak tonneaux and then refines for another 24 months in the bottle. In the glass it has an intense garnet color, with aromas of great complexity. Hints of dried flowers and berry jam, then balsamic hints of eucalyptus and spicy hints of pepper and cloves. In the mouth it is clean and enveloping at the same time, with a dense tannicity, typical of the type. With long persistence. It is not suitable for the classic rib-eye steak but is perfect with white meats with a more delicate taste (think turkey!), and is also excellent with some fish dishes like salmon.
