Piaggia Poggio de' Colli Cabernet Franc 2019
The Piaggia farm is situated in the commune of Poggio a Caiano, in the province of Prato, about 14 kilometres west of Florence. It has vineyards in the Carmignano Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin area, partly in the commune of Poggio a Caiano and partly in the commune of Carmignano.
The winery was set up by Mauro Vannucci, who purchased the land in the DOC area near Piaggia in the mid 70s; he was convinced that the excellent exposure to the sun and the permeable, dry and clayey soil would produce a great Carmignano wine.
He produced the first Piaggia Carmignano Riserva DOCG in 1991 and since then his passion for wine has steadily grown. He has involved his daughter Silvia in this project and she is now the current owner of the winery. At the beginning of the 90s he bought a further 15 hectares in one of the best areas of the appellation, a kind of natural basin a few hundred metres from the centre of Carmignano, which gives a spectacular view of the city of Florence. The current property extends to about 25 hectares, 15 of which are cultivated with vines.
Tasting notes
Deep and intense ruby red color with purplish highlights. Aromatic elegancein balsamic overtones and hints of mint, fruits of the forest and a slight smokefinish. Full-bodied and soft, well- balanced thanks to the fine tannins. The finish is long, meaty and chewy.
It goes well with traditional Italian dishes, red meat and game.
Production notes
VINIFICATION The grapes are carefully selected from the best plots in the vineyard. They are then vinified in open wooden containers using their own natural yeasts; manual punching down is carried out to get the best extraction of substances from the grapes and skin contact lasts about two weeks.
MATURATION The wine is drawn off the lees and then immediately transferred to French oak barriques, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation. During maturation it is periodically racked to make it clearer and prepare it for bottling, which is done without any kind of filtration or clarification process so as to keep all ts organolectic properties intact.
AGING At least 6 months in bottle.
Other notes
Through the use of old French clones present on the estate and after years of careful vinification and specific wine tastings, we began producing a monovarietal Cabernet Franc: Poggio de' Colli. This species of vine has found in our grounds the ideal habitat to produce wines of outstanding elegance, refinement and complexity.
Hence the will to combine French tradition with the heart and soul of Tuscany. Poggio de' Colli is an unconventional wine that is both unique and unrepeatable.
