Cline Family Cellars Small Berry Mourvèdre 2015

Cline Family Cellars is a family-owned and operated winery in Sonoma, California, built on a passion for winemaking and rooted in respect for the land.

Fred Cline started Cline Family Cellars in 1982 in Oakley, California, making his first vintages from original plantings of Mourvedre, Zinfandel, and Carignane, some of which dated back to the 1880's.

In 1989, Fred purchased a 350-acre horse farm in Carneros and moved the winery to Sonoma County. As one of the original Rhone Rangers, he began planting varietals that included a number of vineyards dedicated to Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Since those first plantings, Fred and his wife Nancy have continued to plant vineyards throughout Sonoma County, expanding to include more classic varieties like Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Chardonnay.

Our aim is to be stewards of the land, not only through our natural and sustainable Green String farming methods, but through an awareness of bringing interconnected systems into harmony. We are committed to nurturing the land and creating wines that reflect the bounty of these complex and perfect ecosystems.

There are no compromises when it comes to consistency and quality. From excellent vineyards, to skilled teams working at the winery, to updated systems—we do it all. The result is an expansive, award-winning portfolio of wines with a range of styles and offerings to appeal to the novice and the enthusiast.

Tasting notes

This vineyard has always shown intense concentration of flavors due, in part, to the miniscule yields from the vines. Tobacco, plum, and eucalyptus-mint dominate this wine with plenty of fresh acidity and a firm balanced structure of acid and fine-grained tannins.

Production notes

The grapes were hand-harvested and treated gently in the cellar to emphasize the explosive fruit characteristics. The grapes were almost entirely de-stemmed and lightly crushed with a large proportion of whole berries remaining in the must. Fermentation occurred at moderate temperatures in stainless steel tanks. The wine was pressed when it neared dryness and racked to another settling tank before moving to barrels. The wine was aged for 12 months on French oak - using medium toast levels, providing complex flavors of oak without overpowering the exotic character of this Mourvèdre.

Our Small Berry Mourvèdre grows in a very special small block at Big Break Vineyard that consistently produces one of our most complex and concentrated Mourvèdres. The vineyard is bordered by Eucalyptus trees which gives the wine a signature minty note. The vines in this block are over 100 years old and planted on their own roots, making this one of California’s most historic vineyards. The vines have survived on their own roots because they grow in sand which keeps the phyloxera root louse in check. We dry farm these ancient, head-pruned vines, continuing a practice employed by the Italian and Portuguese immigrants who planted this vineyard before the turn of the last century.
