Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Volnay 1er Cru “Les Angles” 2018

Domaine Louis Boillot is quietly making very fine wines and deserves to be better known. He is married to Ghislaine Barthod, and they have a son called Clément. Louis started his professional life with his brother Pierre in a cellar in Gevrey, but they separated in 2003 and Louis now makes his wines in the same cellar as Ghislaine in Chambolle. His 6.8ha estate includes vines in both Nuits and Beaune, including Fixin, Gevrey, Nuits and Chambolle in the former, as well as Pommard, Volnay and Beaune in the latter. These are wines of natural, unforced elegance which are made from low yields in the vineyard and without excess extraction or new oak in the cellar, which allows the character of the vineyard to express itself.

93 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Boillot began his harvest on August 25 with the 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Angles, and the wine has turned out beautifully, soaring from the glass with a lovely bouquet of cherries, dark berries, peonies, orange rind and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, it's velvety and succulent, concluding with gentle back-end grip that will round out with additional élevage. In case anyone is wondering, the finished alcohol is 13.1%.
