Domaine Thierry & Pascale Matrot Meursault Rouge 2022

Joseph Matrot (1881-1963), the grandson of the owners of a family wine estate in Puligny-Montrachet and Blagny, lived with his wife Marguerite Amoignon and their three children at Château d’Evelle. Marguerite also owned a beautiful wine estate in Meursault. In 1914, they took up residence in Marguerite’s family home, which is today the seat of Famille Matrot, and decided to develop and extend the estate. Their son Pierre began working as a wine grower in 1937. He also bought vineyards, modernized the estate, and, together with his wife Simone Bonin, had five children. Having obtained a degree in wine growing and oenology in Beaune, Thierry, Pierre’s son, born in 1955, continued with business studies in Mâcon Davayé. He joined the estate in 1976 and took over the vinification starting in 1983. Together with his father, Thierry continued to establish the reputation of Famille Matrot and its wines. In January 2000, Thierry and his wife, Pascale, established and developed a limited liability company, allowing them to buy and sell the harvest of the vineyards of Héritiers du Domaine Joseph Matrot. He and Pascale were joined by their daughters, Adèle and Elsa, in the management and winemaking of Famille Matrot.

Adèle Matrot, the second of three daughters born to Thierry and Pascale Matrot, received her master’s degree in wine business in Dijon, and during her time there she studied abroad in both Singapore and Dublin. She also has completed additional studies in oenology and viticulture in Beaune. Her younger sister, Elsa, received a degree in viticulture and oenology at the University of Sciences in Dijon. The sisters began working together at the family estate in 2011, gradually started taking more active roles in the management of the domaine in both winemaking and business. 2016 is the first vintage where Adèle and Elsa were responsible for making the decisions regarding winemaking. Under the tutelage of their parents, Adèle and Elsa are excited and eager to continue the great tradition of the domaine.

The 2022 Meursault Rouge is quite early-picked (before the Volnay Santenots). It has a ripe nose with plush red fruit, candied orange peel and touches of potpourri - more outgoing compared to the La Fussière at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins, finely chiseled and fresh with a precise finish. This is going to be a lovely Meursault Rouge. Drinking window 2026-2035. - Vinous, 92 pts
