Tiare Collio DOC Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Tiare Winery is a highly acclaimed, boutique Italian estate located in Località Sant'Elena within the Dolegna del Collio municipality of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, right near the Slovenian border. Spearheaded by winemaker Roberto Snidarcig, the 10 hectare estate has earned a reputation as a superstar producer, particularly famous for creating world-class white wines.
The estate sits in a unique geographic position nestled roughly 40 miles between the Adriatic Sea and the Julian Alps. This positioning creates distinct day-to-night temperature swings that perfectly balance grape ripeness with crisp acidity. The property straddles two distinct areas. The marly hills of the Collio DOC are dedicated to aromatic whites, while the gravelly, calcareous soils of the Isonzo DOC are used to cultivate structured reds.
The vineyards are planted in “ponca”—a regional soil composition of brittle, fossil-laden marl and sandstone. This high-pH soil infuses the wines with intense minerality, vibrant salinity, and a distinct texture.
Tiare shot to international stardom in 2014 when its Sauvignon beat out Sauvignon Blancs from around the world, including New Zealand and elite French Sauvignon Blancs from Sancerre and Bordeaux to win "Best in the World" at the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon, the top worldwide competition for Sauvignon Blanc. Tiare won again in 2016.
Straw in color with greenish tinges. It has an intense and characteristic aroma, reminiscent of elderberry, broom, pink grapefruit and mango, in perfect harmony. On the palate it reveals itself as fresh with very good structure.
Often hailed as the "Italian Sancerre" as it offer the same flinty, green, and citrus profiles as a French Sancerre.
This wine comes from the Collio DOC from silty clay soils with grapes expressing pure Sauvignon. Cold macerated and soft pressed, the wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks with 20% malolactic fermentation.
